RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To establish cephalometric norms in primary dentition among males and females using novel customized Comprehensive Cephalometric Growth (CCG) Analysis. Material and Methods: The study was conducted on 67 subjects with a mean age of 5.5 yrs. Digital lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained using Planmeca Pro One. The digital images were then transferred to Nemoceph software. Craniofacial Growth (CCG) Analysis was configured in the software with five sub-groups. This sub-grouping was done such that related components were grouped together and comprehensively; it would provide an assessment of every component of the craniofacial region that could be affected either by treatment maneuver or growth process. The same was used for the cephalometric analysis and to determine the cephalometric norms in the primary dentition. Results: Certain linear measurements were higher among males when compared to females. However, most measurements remained similar among males and females during this age group. The CCG analysis provided a comprehensive knowledge of the craniofacial parameters during the growth process. Conclusion: The cephalometric norms during primary dentition thus established using Comprehensive Craniofacial Growth analysis would provide the data for early diagnosis and treatment planning in interceptive orthodontic treatment procedures.

Abstract Objective: The aim was to compare the body composition using classical anthropometry and bioelectric impedance in university students of a Peruvian university. Method: a correlational, cross-sectional study with a research sample of 152 students (77 men and 75 women) enrolled in the 2018-II period with an average age of 20.45 ± 3.63 years. The body mass index and anthropometric measurements were calculated for the anthropometric method. The Yuhasz (1974) equation was used to determine the body fat percentage. The electrical bioimpedance method implemented the tetrapolar multi-frequency direct segmental measurement analyzer Inbody 120. Pearson coefficient was used to establish the correlation, and the Bland Altman graphical method and stability index were used for concordance. The data were analyzed using the statistical software application IBM SPSS Statistics, version 27.0. A level of significance (p <0.05) was used for all analyzes. Results: there is a strong statistically significant correlation (p<0.01 and r = 0.95) between the anthropometric and electrical bioimpedance methods to determine body fat percentage. In addition, there is a good agreement according to the Bland Altman graphical method, reinforced by the stability index to complement the interpretation (IE = 95%). Conclusions: Both methods are interchangeable with each other, so they can be used indistinctly in this type of population to determine body fat percentage.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The accurate assessment of total body and regional body circumferences, volumes, and compositions are critical to monitor physical activity and dietary interventions, as well as accurate disease classifications including obesity, metabolic syndrome, sarcopenia, and lymphedema. We assessed body composition and anthropometry estimates provided by a commercial 3-dimensional optical (3DO) imaging system compared to criterion measures. METHODS: Participants of the Shape Up! Adults study were recruited for similar sized stratifications by sex, age (18-40, 40-60, >60 years), BMI (under, normal, overweight, obese), and across five ethnicities (non-Hispanic [NH] Black, NH White, Hispanic, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander). All participants received manual anthropometry assessments, duplicate whole-body 3DO (Styku S100), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. 3DO estimates provided by the manufacturer for anthropometry and body composition were compared to the criterion measures using concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) and Bland-Altman analysis. Test-retest precision was assessed by root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of variation. RESULTS: A total of 188 (102 female) participants were included. The overall fat free mass (FFM) as measured by DXA (54.1 ± 15.2 kg) and 3DO (55.3 ± 15.0 kg) showed a small mean difference of 1.2 ± 3.4 kg (95% limits of agreement -7.0 to +5.6) and the CCC was 0.97 (95% CI: 0.96-0.98). The CCC for FM was 0.95 (95% CI: 0.94-0.97) and the mean difference of 1.3 ± 3.4 kg (95% CI: -5.5 to +8.1) reflected the difference in FFM measures. 3DO anthropometry and body composition measurements showed high test-retest precision for whole body volume (1.1 L), fat mass (0.41 kg), percent fat (0.60%), arm and leg volumes, (0.11 and 0.21 L, respectively), and waist and hip circumferences (all <0.60 cm). No group differences were observed when stratified by body mass index, sex, or race/ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS: The anthropometric and body composition estimates provided by the 3DO scanner are precise and accurate to criterion methods if offsets are considered. This method offers a rapid, broadly available, and automated method of body composition assessment regardless of body size. Further studies are recommended to examine the relationship between measurements obtained by 3DO scans and metabolic health in healthy and clinical populations.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to analyze the satisfaction and distortion of body image in children from 7 to 10 years old and to verify which anthropometric and socioeconomic factors are associated with them. This is a cross-sectional study, carried out with 307 children from public schools in Goiânia. The child's health and the socioeconomic aspects of the family were assessed using a semi-structured questionnaire; body image was assessed using the Brazilian Silhouettes Scale for Children; and anthropometric data on weight, height, skinfolds and waist circumference were also collected. Gender homogeneity was observed in this study, with a predominance of eutrophic(73%) boys (52%). Despite being a sample with a healthy weight, dissatisfaction and distortion of body image prevailed over most of the sample: dissatisfaction was present in 92% of children, the desire for a smaller silhouette prevailing, while distortion was present in 75% of the sample, with a predominance of underestimation of the silhouette. However, this study found dissatisfaction association with body image only with BMI (measured, current and desired) and waist circumference; and association of the distortion of the body image only with the BMI (measured and current).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Military personnel has a large prevalence of back pain, especially those involved in patrolling routines, as they wear heavy protective equipment. Patrolling includes long periods of sustaining the protective equipment in a sitting or in a motor vehicle (motorcycle or car). Thus, understanding spinal loading of military police officers after patrolling by car (CAR; n = 14), motorcycle (MOT; n = 14), and administrative (ADM; n = 14) routines is relevant to establish preventive strategies. METHODS: The torque of the trunk and working and anthropometric characteristics were assessed to explain spinal loading using stature variation measures. Precise stature measures were performed before and after a 6 h journey (LOSS) and 20 min after a resting posture (RECOV). The trunk extensor (PTE BM-1 ) and flexor (PTF BM-1 ) muscles' isometric peak torque were measured before the working journey. RESULTS: The LOSS was similar between CAR and MOT (4.8 and 5.8 mm, respectively) after 6 h of patrolling. The ADM presented the lowest LOSS (2.8 mm; P < .05). No changes in RECOV between groups were observed (P > .05). Vibration may explain the greater spinal loading involved in patrolling in comparison to the ADM. A GLM analysis revealed that BMI was the only explanatory factor for stature loss. No independent variables explained RECOV. The ability of the trunk muscles to produce force did not influence LOSS or RECOV. CONCLUSIONS: Military police officers involved in patrolling may require greater post-work periods and strategies designed to reduce the weight of the protective apparatus to dissipate spinal loading. The external load used in patrolling is a relevant spinal loading factor.

Abstract Regional anthropometry turns out to be an important procedure in the projection of the athlete's performance. The objective of the present study is to relate the anthropometric characteristics of the lower limbs of the body with the jumping power of young athletes. A correlational methodology was used to evaluate 44 youth athletes (30 men and 14 women). They were measured for jump height in 90° squat (SJ), countermovement with fixed hands (CMJ-MF), and countermovement with free hands (CMJ-ML). These variables derived into the power calculation. With this, we established the anthropometric characteristic of lower body parts linked to skinfolds and perimeters, obtaining values of mid (MMED) and maximum thigh (MMAX), corrected calf perimeter (PCP), quadriceps muscle section area (ASMC), hamstring muscular section area (ASMI), and total section of the muscular thigh area (ASMM). The results showed a significant correlation between the corrected calf perimeter and the jump power in SJ (r=0.73; p=0.00), CMJ-MF (r=0.72; p=0.00) and CMJ-ML(r=0.7; p=0.00). In conclusion, the calf perimeter presented related components to the young athletes' jumping power.

Background: relative fat mass (RFM) has been proposed recently, and the effectiveness in relation to other anthropometric indexes already consolidated regarding the predictive capacity of high blood pressure levels (HBPL) has not been investigated yet. Objectives: the objective was to analyze the predictive capacity of RFM for HBPL, and to compare it with others indexes. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted with 896 individuals. Weight, height, hip, waist circunference (WC), and neck circunference measurements were evaluated, and RFM, body mass index (BMI), body adiposity index, waist/hip ratio, and waist/height ratio were calculated. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures were measured on one occasion. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, a logistic regression model, and the analysis of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used. Results: HBPL proportion was higher in men (34.68 %, p < 0.01). There was a positive correlation (p < 0.01) between all anthropometric measurements and SBP and DBP. WC in males (OR, 3.66; p < 0.01) and BMI in females (OR, 5.06; p < 0.01) showed the greatest associations with HBPL. There was no statistical difference (p > 0.05) in the area under the curve. Conclusions: the findings of our study suggest that RFM is not the best index for predicting HBPL, although it has shown positive associations. (AU)

(AU)

RESUMO

SUMMARY: The position of the lower lateral cartilages is directly related to good nasal functionality. When these cartilages exhibit cephalic malposition, the angle of divergence between cartilages is usually less than 60 degrees, which can cause external nasal valve insufficiency. The objective of this study was to validate the rhinogoniometer, an innovative surgical instrument that allows for diagnosing the position of this cartilage intraoperatively. In the intraoperative period, the angle of divergence, which is the angle formed between the two lateral branches of the lower lateral cartilages, was measured in 31 primary rhinoplasty patients. The rhinogoniometer measurement was compared with that of the computerized analysis, and the reproducibility of measurements with the rhinogoniometer between two different surgeons was determined. When comparing the values obtained by the two methods, a significant difference was found (p = 0.034). On average, the angles measured by the rhinogoniometer were 3.7 degrees smaller than the measurements made by the software. It was observed that when the angles measured by both methods were above 75 degrees, the differences between the two measurements were higher (p = 0.022). However, for angles up to 75 degrees, the measurement using the rhinogoniometer was, on average, 0.79 degrees higher than the measurement taken by the software. When the difference in angles obtained by the two methods between different surgeons was evaluated, there was a significant difference (p < 0.023). In conclusion, at angles up to 75 degrees, the rhinogoniometer showed a negligible difference of 0.79 degrees higher than the measurement obtained via software. Measurements with the rhinogoniometer were also shown to be reproducible with different surgeons.

RESUMO

Background: Inappropriate anthropometric measurements of infants and toddlers lead to a misclassification in nutritional status and loss of important interventions. Considering the practice conducted in this program within a country, its impact on millions of children must be considered. This study assesses the ability of community health volunteers (CHVs) before and after anthropometric training on infants and toddlers. Methods. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasiexperimental and pretest-posttest design. The pre- and posttraining assessments of CHVs were conducted by standardized trainers using instruments developed according to WHO standards. There were 11 and 13 statement items for infants' and toddlers' indicators of assessment in anthropometric measurements, respectively. The result of the assessment was then analyzed using Rasch modeling with stacking and racking data analysis techniques. Results: The CHVs' skills before training were far from adequate. Although widely varied, all trainees improved their abilities. Stacking analysis showed that the skills of all CHVs in measuring infants and toddlers increased by 2.68 and 3.34 logits (p < 0.01), respectively. Racking analysis showed a decrease in the perceived difficulty of all items by 2.61 and 3.07 logits for infant and toddler measurements, respectively (p < 0.01). The results of the racking analysis showed that the difficulty in measuring the anthropometrics of infants decreased more than that of toddlers. Conclusions: CHVs' capacity to monitor child growth must be refreshed regularly. Standardized and proper training and assessment were developed to make CHVs reliable in taking anthropometric measurements of infants and toddlers.

Introduction. The Prader orchidometer is the standard method used to measure testicular volume (TV) in children and adolescents. Objective. To assess the concordance in the estimation of TV and puberty onset with the Prader, Chipkevitch, and Sotos orchidometric techniques. Methods. Cross-sectional descriptive study conducted among male children and adolescents aged 9-20 years. For each adolescent, TV was measured with the methods by Prader (gold standard), Chipkevitch (graphic model), and Sotos (measurement of testicular width with a plastic ruler and use of a formula equivalent to the ellipsoid equation). Male children and adolescents with urogenital conditions and disorders affecting testicular growth were excluded. Kappa statistics was used to determine concordance among methods for puberty onset, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman (B&A) plots for TV. Results. In total, 377 healthy males were included. Regarding the concordance for TV (mL), the Prader-Chipkevitch comparison obtained an ICC of 0.994 and a p < 0.001; while the Prader-Soto comparison obtained an ICC of 0.312 and a p < 0.001. With the B&A plots, mean differences were close to 0 mL in the Prader-Chipkevitch comparison and close to 8 mL in the Prader-Sotos comparison. Concordance for puberty onset obtained a kappa value of 0.93 and 0.75 in the Prader-Chipkevitch and Prader-Sotos comparisons, respectively. Conclusion. The Prader and Chipkevitch orchidometers show an excellent concordance in estimating TV and puberty onset; therefore, both methods could be used interchangeably in the daily care of male adolescents. The Sotos method showed a high concordance in estimating pubertal onset, but low in measuring TV.

(AU)

Background: prediabetes is a state observed before type-2 diabetes. Nowadays the obesity epidemic could be due to a rise in the incidence of prediabetes. Mexico has public policies for the management of non-communicable diseases. However, obesity rates continue to increase. The aim of this study was to elaborate on a diagnosis of prediabetes in the pediatric Mexican population, and compare the proportions of comorbidities that children with and without prediabetes had. Methods: a cross-sectional study was performed with 569 participants of 4 to 19 years of age from public schools. Anthropometric (weight, height, and waist circumference), clinical (blood pressure), and biochemical (fasting glucose, lipidic profile, and uric acid) variables were collected. Results: in all, 8.6 % of the population had prediabetes. Variables with the highest altered prevalence included triglycerides and systolic blood pressure. Boys had higher rates of prediabetes, altered BP, and hyperuricemia than girls. Children with prediabetes had a greater risk of elevated waist circumference, blood pressure, and uric acid measures. Conclusions: the Mexican pediatric population had elevated rates of prediabetes. Furthermore, the group with prediabetes had a higher risk of presenting high values of triglycerides, blood pressure, uric acid, and total cholesterol. (AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The assessment of biological maturity status plays an important role in talent identification and development programs. AIM: To compare age at predicted adult height and BAUS skeletal age as indicators of biological maturity status in youth soccer players using a construct-validity approach. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Participants were 114 players from the U12 to U17 age groups of a professional youth soccer academy. Maturity status was determined via percentage of predicted adult height based upon the Khamis-Roche method (somatic maturity) and assessed via the SonicBone BAUSTM system (skeletal maturity). Convergent and known-groups validity were evaluated between maturity assessment methods and by comparing maturity-related selection biases across age groups. RESULTS: Although maturity status indicators were largely interrelated (r = .94, 95%CL 0.91-0.96), concordance (κ = 0.31 to 0.39) and Spearman's rank-order correlations (ρ = 0.45-0.52) of classification methods were moderate. A selection bias towards early maturing players emerged in the U14 age group which remained relatively consistent through to the U17 age group. CONCLUSIONS: Results confirm the construct-validity of both methods to assess biological maturity status although further validation relative to established indicators of biological maturity is needed. Furthermore, caution is also warranted when interpreting maturity status classification methods interchangeably given the poor concordance between classification methods.

INTRODUCTION: in children the use of therapeutic interventions, which includes the administration of medications, is based on body weight. OBJECTIVE: to validate the equations proposed by "Advanced Pediatric Life Support - APLS" in 2011 (APLS 1) and 2001 (APLS 2) to estimate weight in Ecuadorian girls and boys, considering their ethnic diversity and age groups. METHODS: a cross-sectional study which included 21,735 girls and boys belonging to three ethnic groups: mestizo, indigenous, and other (white, black, and mulatto), with ages between 0 and 12 years, who participated in the ENSANUT-ECU study. Differences, Spearman's correlation, Bland-Altman graphs, and percentage error (PE) were calculated. Data were processed and analyzed using R. RESULTS: APLS 1 tends to overestimate weight whereas APLS 2 underestimates it. The estimated weight bias was greater for the classical equation. The indigenous and "other" ethnic groups presented the highest differences with respect to measured weight. The differences between estimated weight and measured weight increased progressively with age. With APLS 1, the percentage of individuals with a PE > 10 % was greater than with APLS 2. CONCLUSIONS: APLS does not accurately estimate weight in the Ecuadorian pediatric population. The difference between estimated weight and measured weight is sensitive to ethnic and age differences

(AU)

Background: Childhood obesity is a global public health problem, being one of the risk factors for developing serious health problems in subsequent years. The objective of the studywas to determine the relationship between neck circumference and anthropometric indices to assess obesity in schoolchildren. Peruvians from public educational institutions in Peru. Methods: Correlational type study in which anthropometric indices and their relationship with the Neck Perimeter (PC) were analyzed as a possible index to evaluate obesity in Peruvian schoolchildren. The data was collected in two public educational institutions (initial and primary) in the Villa El Salvador-Lima district. A total sample of 178 schoolchildren from 3 to 14 years of age who met the study inclusion criteria was obtained. Results: 81.8% of women are short, and 68.8% of men areat very high risk (visceral obesity) in relation to BAP for age. The correlations of the Spearman coefficients for both sexes established the best relationship between the PC and the PAB showed a direct and significant association (p < 0.01) in women (r = 0.808) and men (r = 0.787), in comparison with the IMC and IPABE. Conclusions: The PC could be used as a simple, inexpensive and non-invasive measurement for the evaluation of obesity in Peruvian schoolchildren. (AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) imaging is being used progressively to create models of patients with anterior chest wall deformities. Resulting models are used for clinical decision-making, surgical planning, and analysis. However, given the broad range of 3D imaging systems available and the fact that planning and analysis techniques are often only validated for a single system, it is important to analyze potential intrasystem and intersystem differences. The objective of this study was to investigate the accuracy and reproducibility of three commercially available 3D imaging systems that are used to obtain images of the anterior chest wall. METHODS: Among 15 healthy volunteers, 3D images of the anterior chest wall were acquired twice per imaging device. Reproducibility was determined by comparison of consecutive images acquired per device while the true accuracy was calculated by comparison of 3D image derived and calipered anthropometric measurements. A maximum difference of 1.00 mm. was considered clinically acceptable. RESULTS: All devices demonstrated statistically comparable (P = 0.21) reproducibility with a mean absolute difference of 0.59 mm. (SD: 1.05), 0.54 mm. (SD: 2.08), and 0.48 mm. (SD: 0.60) for the 3dMD, EinScan Pro 2X Plus, and Artec Leo, respectively. The true accuracy was, respectively, 0.89 mm. (SD: 0.66), 1.27 mm. (SD: 0.94), and 0.81 mm. (SD: 0.71) for the 3dMD, EinScan, and Artec device and did not statistically differ (P = 0.085). CONCLUSIONS: Three-dimensional imaging of the anterior chest wall utilizing the 3dMD and Artec Leo is feasible with comparable reproducibility and accuracy, whereas the EinScan Pro 2X Plus is reproducible but not clinically accurate.
